Severna Park makes initial appearance; Loyola returns

by Derek Toney

After an impressive spring, Severna Park High has carried the momentum into the early weeks of the 2021 fall regular season. The Falcons are one of two new teams in the latest VSN Football Top 20.

It’s the first-ever VSN Top 20 ranking for the Anne Arundel County school, which won all four starts in the spring. The Falcons have yet to allow a point in its three regular season outings.

Loyola Blakefield, which was knocked out the poll (15th in preseason) after dropping its opener to St. Mary’s, is back after dominating then-No. 10 St. Vincent Pallotti this past weekend. St. Frances Academy, coming off a rout of perennial WCAC power Our Lady of Good Counsel, remains No. 1 followed by Archbishop Spalding, Calvert Hall College, Mount St. Joseph and McDonogh School.

There are no Top 20 matchups this weekend, but there will be several intriguing games. Spalding hosts nationally-ranked Gonzaga College (No. 22 in latest USA Today Super 25 and No. 1 in District region by Washington Post), undefeated and 17th-ranked Atholton is at unbeaten Oakland Mills (3-0) in Howard County league action. Owings Mills puts its promising 3-0 start on the line at No. 10 Milford Mill Academy in a battle for first in Baltimore County’s Division II.

Below is the complete VSN Football Top 20 for Week 3.
