Broadneck High football coach Jeff Herrick has announced his retirement, completing one of the most successful tenures in Anne Arundel County history.
Under Herrick, Broadneck went 167-77 with a Class 4A state title game appearance in 2003 and five trips to the state semifinals. The Cape St. Claire school (10-3) lost to Henry A. Wise, 14-7, a couple of weeks ago in the 4A semifinals.
Broadneck finished No. 4 in the final Varsity Sports Network metro Top 20. The Bruins’ playoff charge included victories over Old Mill and Arundel, avenging regular season setbacks.
Herrick’s 167 wins ranks second behind Arundel’s Chuck Markiewicz (183-81), who’s Herrick’s best friend. Herrick spent 12 seasons as an Arundel assistant before taking over at Broadneck in 1989.
