The Urbana Hawks entered the 3A/4A North Regional Duals as the third seeded team, behind Hereford and host Poly, but the Hawks proved, Wednesday, that they were more than third best.
Wrapping up a 34-22 win over the Hereford Bulls, Urbana had enough of a lead to forfeit the final two bouts and still advance to the region finals, using five bonus-point wins and three decisions to beat the Bulls.
But the semis would seem to be the biggest battle of Urbana’s night, as the Hawks went on to destroy Poly in a 60-18 regional title win.
Dropping only four matches in the second dual meet, Urbana used three three-win series and an added win to walk away victorious over the No. 1 seed, adding points with falls with each sequence.
Starting the winning night, Billy Krop, Matt Steinheimer and JT Freeze each decked their opponents at 125, 130 and 135, followed by another series of six-point wins by Steven Redding, Dan Johnston and Joe Rimel at 152, 160 and 171.
Two matches later, Matt Semelsberger rung in a fall at 215, breaking up a p[air of Polly wins at 189 and 285, but the Hawks would close the night with three successive pins by David Abretski (103), Brandon Plane (112) and Nick Frank (119).
Urbana will head to Liganore High School, Saturday, to take on fellow regional champions Stephen Decatur (East), LaPlata (South) and Blake (West) in search of a 2011 State Dual Meet title.
