Key league matches on tap as area football season hits midway point

The area high school football campaign reaches the halfway point starting Friday.

A pair of undefeated matches highlight the slate along with a Top 5 showdown. Nine teams enter the weekend undefeated.

Below is the top five games of the weekend, followed by the complete area schedule.

No. 7 Mervo (4-0) at Edmondson (4-0)

When: Friday, 3:45 p.m.

What you need to know: The Mustangs can pretty much secure the Baltimore City Division I crown with a victory. The Red Storm, off to a 4-0 start for the second straight season, last defeated Mervo in 2015.

 

No. 4 Calvert Hall College (4-1) at No. 5 McDonogh School (5-0)

When: Friday, 6 p.m.

What you need to know: The resurgent Eagles start MIAA A Conference play with a Top 5 matchup with The Hall. The Cardinals, looking to avoid a 0-2 start in league play for the first time since 2016, have won the prior two meetings against McDonogh.

 

Parkville (4-0) at Catonsville (4-0)

When: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

What you need to know: The Baltimore County 4A Division crown will be decided. The Comets are off to their best start since 2011 (finished 11-1) when they won the county Division I title and reached 4A state semifinals.

After an impressive victory at Milford Mill last week, Franklin and running back Jonathan Smith takes on Kenwood in Baltimore County 3A Division action Friday.

No. 14 St. Vincent Pallotti (5-1) at Archbishop Curley (4-1)

When: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

What you need to know: The Panthers look to continue their impressive start in MIAA B play (4-0; outscored opposition, 155-7) with a 2018 final rematch with defending champ St. Mary’s looming next weekend. The Friars hope to atone from last week’s 36-7 loss to St. Mary’s.

 

Oakdale (3-1) at No. 13 Elkton (4-0)

When: Friday, 7 p.m.

What you need to know: The Elks get an opportunity to announce themselves as a legit Class 2A state title contender against the reigning champs. Oakdale humbled Elkton, 38-0, in last year’s state semifinals.
