No Nick Rosati, no problem for Arundel High’s football team. The No. 2 Wildcats rolled past Meade, 34-6, in an Anne Arundel County league match Friday evening behind backup quarterback Jack Gordon.

Getting the starting call with starter Rosati out due to mononucleosis, Gordon passed for 198 yards and three touchdowns and added 100 on the ground. The Wildcats (9-0 overall, 9-0 Anne Arundel) pulled away in the fourth quarter to lock up the Class 4A East Region championship and itch closer to a second straight perfect regular season.

Michael Coombs, Gary Cropper, Tyler Washington, John White and Joseph Blackwell had touchdowns for Arundel who put up three scores over the final 12 minutes to keep possession of the Jerry Mears Trophy. The Wildcats led 13-6 entering the fourth, but Coombs recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, giving Arundel some breathing room.

Gordon did the rest, throwing a nine-yard score to Washington and six yards to Cropper. The sophomore will likely get the call next week in the season finale against Southern-Anne Arundel.

The Wildcats will need to win next week as they’re in a chase with Suitland of Prince George’s County for the overall No. 1 spot in Class 4A and home field through the state semifinal round.

Meade (4-5, 4-5), which received a 60-yard touchdown run from Calvinaugh Jones, closes its season at South River Friday evening.
