Perry Hall High rising senior Joe Glos has given a verbal commitment to play for UMBC. Glos, a midfielder, said he attracted interest from DePaul, Duquesne, High Point, Lehigh and Towson before accepting an offer from the Retrievers.

“I’ve known Coach [Pete] Cargini for several years. I went up there [UMBC], met the players and everything was cool,” said Glos. “I wanted to commit before my senior year, so I wouldn’t have the pressure of worrying about getting into a college.”

Phil Saunders, a former teammate of Glos at Perry Hall, is a sophomore goalie for the Retrievers, and assistant coach Anthony Adams is one of Glos’ coaches on the Baltimore Bays Chelsea U-15/16 squad. The Bays finished third at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy in California last month.

His showing with the Bays helped garnered Glos a spot on ESPN Rise’s preseason All-Mid Atlantic team. Last fall, Glos was an all-Baltimore County selection after leading the Gators to the league championship.

“He works tirelessly the entire game,” said Perry Hall coach Danny Skelton of his soon-to-be four-year starter. “He’s earned his position through his speed, energy and power.”

Glos said he’s focused on helping Perry Hall contend for the Class 4A state title this coming season. After reaching the state finals in 2007 and 2008, the Gators failed to advance out of regional play last fall.

“Everyone’s close on this team,” said Glos. “We’re playing for the front of the jersey, not the back.”
