Five teams crowned multiple champions in the 1A/2A South Regions, Saturday, at Glenelg High School, but it was the hosting Gladiators who emerged with the more than 100-point victory for the tournament title.
Gladiators Austin Pagnotta (125) Nick Caffrey (130), Chrales Walls and David Pruett led Glenelg to the large win, all claiming individual titles, and seven other wrestlers place in the top four to qualify for the MPSSAA State Tournament next weekend.
Patuxent, Hammond, Oakland Mills and Gwynn Park all notched multi-title nights, with Patuxent winning back-to-back crowns in Matt Gancayco (135) and Kevin Walsh (140), and Oakland Mills’ Zach Hensley and Tony Farace at 103 and 112, respectively.
Hammond’s two titles were captured by Mathias Ngang (152) and Baldwin Asala (215), next to Gwynn Park’s Dion Curtis (189) and Trey Seymour (285).
Marriotts Ridge grappler Ian Hochuli kept the 119-pound title in the hands of the Baltimore-Metro area, before Poolesville’s Robert Winning took down a title at 145.
Hammond will be advancing seven wrestlers to next weekend’s state tournament, whie Oakland Mills sends six and Marriotts Ridge with one.
