Lions cruise to Carroll County girls basketball crown
For the first time since 2015, Liberty High girls basketball are champions. The Lions defeated Manchester Valley, 55-44, Wednesday evening to complete a perfect – albeit truncated – season.
Kayla Allen scored 14 points for Liberty, and Jess Littlejohn added 12. Samatha Hardy (11) and Maddi Taggerty (10) finished in double figures for the Lions.
The Eldersburg school took over in the second half (outscored Manchester Valley, 30-20) to finish 13-0 (overall) in Carroll County Athletic League (CCAL) play.
The Lions did it in dominating fashion, winning all their games by double-digits. Eight games were decided by at least 24 points.
Liberty only led, 25-24, at halftime Wednesday, but stretched it to 37-30 after three quarters. The Lions scored the first six points in the final frame, and Manchester Valley never recovered.
Carroll County is the only area public system playing basketball in the winter. Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford and Howard counties and Baltimore City have forgo winter athletics because of COVID-19 concerns.
Those areas, minus Baltimore City, will have a truncated fall season, starting next month.
The IAAM recently started an “open season” basketball format, and the MIAA will conduct a regular season-only campaign starting Feb. 17.
