King delivers seven points in a win over Georgetown Prep


The Gilman lacrosse team kicked off its 2019 season, the final one for head coach Brooks Matthews, on Tuesday, with an exciting, 9-8, non-conference road win over Georgetown Prep, on the road in Bethesda.

The Greyhounds broke a 7-7 tie with a goal from Will Godine, with 7:28 to play, for what proved to proved to be the game winner. Billy Spillman, with an assist from Sam King, then added his second goal, at the 2 minute mark, to provide important insurance. Prep one goal back, but the Greyhounds held on for the victory.

King had a huge day, scoring a hat-trick and delivering four assists, while Godine and Spillman scored twice each. Logan Paff and Pierce Washburn had the other goals and Andy Andrews added an assist.

Another hero for Gilman was goalkeeper Noah Klein who stopped 13 shots. In addition, Nick Tussing dominated the face-offs, winning 12-of-14.

Gilman held leads of 1-, 3-1 and 7-4, but Prep kept battling back. James Flannery led the Little Hoyas with three goals and Zach Whittier had two.
