Greyhounds on comeback trail in 2019
With practice for the 2019 high school football season a few days away, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
Gilman School Greyhounds
2018 record: 1-9
Overview: The Greyhounds suffered their worst season in decades, going winless in MIAA A Conference play. The Roland Park school hope to rebound in 2019 with senior linemen Stefan Gladis, a Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 selection, senior wide receiver/defensive back Jackson McCambridge and sophomore running back Jermaine Conyers.
Toughest 2019 opponent: Mount St. Joseph. The Gaels could be the preseason favorite in the MIAA A Conference. Running back Marlowe Wax, a Syracuse commit, and junior quarterback Billy Atkins are expected to be main clogs of another explosive offense while Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 picks Nate Slutzky (linebacker) and Tyler Leavy (line) return on defense.
Most intriguing 2019 opponent: McDonogh School. Like Gilman, the Eagles will look to rebound from a disappointing 3-6 showing in 2018. The Owings Mills school, which will meet the Greyhounds for the 104th time in the regular season finale, returns one of the area’s elite in Penn State University commit Curtis Jacobs (wide receiver/linebacker).
By a number: 3. Consecutive losing season for Gilman, which previous losing campaign was in 2007 (4-5).
