Perry Hall advances to 4A girls soccer state final; Mount Hebron, Patterson Mill, Severna Park and Towson fall
Perry Hall High is a win away from a state girls’ soccer championship. The Gators defeated Prince George’s County’s Eleanor Roosevelt, 10-0, in a Class 4A semifinal at Henry A. Wise in Upper Marlboro Saturday.
The road to Loyola University hit a devastating roadblock for local girls soccer squads Saturday as Towson, Severna Park, Patterson Mill and Mount Hebron each dropped state semifinal matches.
Mount Hebron fell to Frederick County’s Thomas Johnson, 3-1, in a 3A semifinal at Linganore. The Vikings’ only score came from Maddie Hammond, pulling the Howard County squad to within 2-1 in the second half.
The Ellicott City school (8-8-1), which entered the postseason with a losing record, got no closer. It was the Vikings’ first state semifinal appearance since 2000.
Towson was also unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit, losing 3-1 to Calvert County’s Northern. Emma Kirts’ goal in the 70th minute was the only goal for Towson, in its first state final four match since 2005.
Patterson Mill has been perennial bridesmaid the previous three seasons in Class 1A. The Huskies’ chance to finally get over the proverbial hump was denied by Taylor Mackrell.
Mackrell’s goal with 31 seconds left in regulation gave Washington County’s Smithburg a 2-1 victory over the Huskies at Northeast. Junior Taylor Shultz’s game-tying tally in the second half was Patterson Mill’s only score.
Severna Park will have to continue waiting for its first state title since 2003 as Montgomery County’s Walt Whitman posted a 1-0 victory in the other 4A semifinal at Wise.
Sophomore forward Morgan Riso’s tally in the 60th minute was all Whitman needed. The Vikings, ranked No. 5 in the District region by the Washington Post, will play Perry Hall for the state title next week at Loyola University’s Ridley Athletic Center.
The Gators score early and often in their rout of Eleanor Roosevelt.
Phoebe Canoles scored four goals, and Kara Dietrich added three goals and three assists. Senior Ashlee Wilsynski tallied twice.
It will be the sixth state final for the Baltimore County school, which lost to Montgomery County’s Walter Johnson in overtime in 2016.
