Mount Saint Joseph got a goal from Tyler Dorr in the second minute of action, and Mike Brathwait scored with three minutes to go in the first half as the Gaels earned a hard fought 2-0 win over Archbishop Spalding, in Irvington on Saturday.
“We did a nice job in the beginning, pressuring the ball all over the field, and we had some nice goals,” said St. Joe coach Mike Saint Martin. The defending MIAA A Conference champs improved to 4-2 in the loop with the win.
“I got the ball from out wide. Joey (Isaja) was calling for the ball, and I tried to play it to him; it popped right back out to my feet and I just ripped it in from 90,” said Dorr, whose goal gave the Gaels an early lead which they never relinquished.
Brathwait said that the Gaels played with intensity.
“If we play hard like this, we’ll get results.”
Spalding keeper Casey Beyers was outstanding in the goal for coach John Coppola.
“We got another tremendous game from Casey,” said Coppola. “He’s playing at a really high level. If we could all play at that level, we’ll be alright.”
Beyers had 11 saves for the Cavs.
The defending MIAA A Conference Gaels have two big games next week. The Gaels travel to Towson, on Tuesday to face Calvert Hall, and on Thursday they’re on the road again when they go to Owings Mills to play the top-ranked McDonogh Eagles.
