In front of a huge Homecoming crowd on Saturday afternoon, No. 14 Archbishop Curely followed up its upset of Archbishop Spalding last week with a 41-7 rout of Severn, in MIAA B Conference football action.
Curley dominated from the outset, building a 21-0 first quarter lead which grew to 35-0 at the half. The second half was played largely under a running clock as the Friars coasted to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the league. The win paired with Spalding’s win over Boys’ Latin on Friday leaves Curley and BL tied at 5-1 atop the league standings, with Spalding and St. Paul’s just a stride back at 4-1.
Massive sophomore fullback Nick D’Avanzo opened the scoring with a six-yard run and senior Joe Evans followed with a one-yard run. Quarterback Luke Stidham also tossed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Williams in the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, Evans added a second touchdown on a four-yard run and Domonya Womack capped Curley’s big first half with a six-yard touchdown run.
In the fourth quarter, James Cooper got on the scoring sheet with a four-yeard TD run.
Severn’s lone score came in the third quarter on a 30-yard TD pass from Adam Blaszczak to Joe Kelly.
Curley intercepted two passes in the contest, one each from Xavier Banks and Deion Broxton. Antond McDonald led Curley with 54 yards rushing, while Stidham and Dominic Hezekia each had 49 yards on the ground. Stidham added an additional 62 through the air.
Curley will be in Annapolis next Friday night to face St. Mary’s, while Severn (0-7, 0-5) will be at home to battle St. Frances.
