Mary Sobota from Franklin High is the week three winner of Extra Innings’ Softball Player of the Week award. The senior hurler helped power the No. 7 Indians to three victories last week.
In a 6-2 decision over Hereford Apr. 6, Sobota pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and nine strikeouts. At the plate, she went 3 for 4 with two doubles and scored two runs.
The following day against Parkville, Sobota went 2 for 2 and scored a run in a 3-2 victory. She allowed one earned run and five hits on the mound.
Sobota closed the week on the mound with a one-hitter against Kenwood Saturday, allowing no earned runs and striking out eight. She went 2 for 4 at the plate and scored two runs in a 10-2 victory, capping a 7-of-10 week with three doubles and five runs scored.
“Last week was definitely a challenge, especially with Kenwood. Last year, they were a fairly good team and this year, they did have the mechanics that I expected to see from them,” said Sobota, who’s considering Temple Univeristy or North Carolina-Charlotte for college. “So it’s not like we blew over them, we knew we had a challenge in front of us.”
A four-year starter, Sobota succeeded Jordan Eades (Morgan State) on the mound. Sobota played shortstop in her freshman and sophomore season.
“She’s been solid from day one,” said Franklin coach Ed Lahay. “She had great location and movement on her pitches. She’s the heart and soul of the team.”
Each week during the spring season, Extra Innings will recognize an outstanding performance by a softball and baseball player. The winner will receive a plaque, courtesy of Extra Innings.
