No. 13 Mustangs’ season end due to ineligible player; Old Mill advances

The Meade High girls basketball team must forfeit Monday night’s upset playoff victory over Old Mill for using an ineligible player, Anne Arundel County officials said Tuesday.

Officials at Meade realized the infraction and reported it to the county Office of Athletics Tuesday. An investigation resulted in the forfeit announcement by afternoon.

“AACPS is not identifying the player or the reason for ineligibility,” according to the release from the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Communications Office.

The ineligible player will not be able to participate in county athletics for 60 days.

The Mustangs, ranked No. 13 in the VSN Girls Basketball Top 20, upset the No. 10 Patriots, 66-60, in the Class 4A East Region I semifinal after losing to them twice during the regular season.

The Patriots (22-1), who reached the state title game last season, will now travel to meet No. 2 Howard (23-0) in the regional final Wednesday at 6 p.m. The game features a clash between the Anne Arundel County champion and the Howard County champion for a chance to move on to the state quarterfinals.
