The streak is over for Mount St. Joseph.
The Gaels defeated St. Paul’s School, 10-6, in a MIAA A Conference lacrosse contest in Brooklandville, on Tuesday. Mike LeClair and Craig Costabile each scored three goals for St. Joe (11-5 overall, 1-4 MIAA A).
The victory snapped a 32-game league losing streak for the Irvington school, which last won in conference play in May of 2009 when it claimed a 13-5 victory over Archbishop Spalding. Mount St. Joseph won just four games the past two seasons, but under second-year coach Dave Slafkosky, a former assistant at the University of Maryland, the Gaels have improved.
The Gaels took a major step Tuesday, defeating perennial MIAA A stronghold St. Paul’s, which won the league title two springs ago. Nick Fairley had two goals for St. Joe, and Colin Reymann stopped eight shots in goal.
Spencer Parks had three goals and an assist for the Crusaders (4-11), who have yet to win a league game (0-5) in 2012. St. Paul’s travels to No. 2 Gilman School Friday afternoon while Mount St. Joseph visits No. 5 Boys’ Latin School.
