by Derek Toney

After reaching its first state semifinal since 1992, Overlea High has a second tour in VSN’s Boys Basketball Top 20.

The Falcons (21-4) from Baltimore County school won on the road at Walkersville in Frederick County Saturday to reach the Class 2A state final four. Overlea will play Southern Maryland’s Westlake, Wednedsay evening at Blair in Montgomery County.

Seven area squads – No. 5 Parkville, Lake Clifton (7th), ninth-ranked City College, No. 14 Edmondson, Meade (15th), 20th-ranked Patterson Mill and Overlea – will be in action in the final week of the 2021-22 campaign.

Edmondson and Patterson Mill will meet Tuesday evening in the 1A state semifinals at Prince George’s County’s Henry A. Wise, with the winner facing either Lake Clifton or Cambridge-South Dorchester in Friday’s state championship game at the University of Maryland.

City, the lone area representative remaining in Class 3A, will play Southern Maryland’s Huntingtown in a state semifinal match at North Point in Charles County Tuesday evening. Meade and Parkville are on a collison course in 4A.

Parkville will put its undefeated mark on the line against reigning state champ, Prince George’s County’s Eleanor Roosevelt, Wednesday night at North Point. Meade will face Montgomery County’s Winston Churchill at Henry A. Wise Wednesday evening.

Mount St. Joseph, which won its eighth Baltimore Catholic League Tournament championship, remains No. 1 with St. Frances Academy, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, John Carroll School and Parkville. The Gaels and Panthers will finish their respective campaigns at the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament in Cumberland.

Mount Carmel, which took Mount St. Joseph to the wire in Sunday’s MIAA A final, is No. 2 followed by Spalding, John Carroll and St. Frances. The teams will now battle for the 51st Baltimore Catholic League Tournament title, with quarterfinal action Wednesday.
