Welcome to the 2013 Enoch Office/Varsity Sports Network preseason Top 20 boys’ basketball poll. VSN ranks the top teams in the Baltimore region which covers public and private schools in Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Cecil County, Harford County and Howard County.

As we progress towards the regular season, we will countdown our 2013 Enoch Office/VSN Boys’ Basketball Preseason Rankings from No. 20 all the way to No. 1.

8. John Carroll School Patriots

2012-13 record: 26-12 (MIAA A Conference & Baltimore Catholic League semifinals; No. 7 in final VSN Top 20)

Coach: Tony Martin (9th season)

Returning letter winners – 6

Returning starters – 3

Key returning players – Eli Long, 6-foot, junior, guard; Kimbal Mackenzie, 6-1, junior, guard; Jordan Martin, 6-0, senior, guard; Lionel Owona, 6-6, senior, forward; Mike Terstea, 6-8, sophomore, forward; Malik Tyne, 6-2, junior, forward

Key newcomers – Reggie Anderson, 6-0, senior; Issac Bassey, 6-9, sophomore, center; Kevin Kangu, 6-3, sophomore guard; Gonzalo Laura, 6-3, senior, guard; Mateus Maccieri, 6-5, junior, forward; Devin Smaldore, 5-10, senior, guard; Monty Urmilevicius, 6-7, sophomore, forward

Outlook – The Patriots should again be in the hunt in the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League. The Bel Air school lost to eventual champ St. Frances (MIAA A) and Mount St. Joseph (BCL) in the round of four.

Mackenzie, a honorable mention BCL selection last season, is back in the starting lineup with Jordan Martin and Tertsea. Jordan Martin will attend St. Rose  in New York next year.

John Carroll will have a deep front court with Owona, Tertsea and Urmilevicius, who’s raw but skilled. He’s already received a verbal offer from James Madison University.

Tony Martin said Tyne and Long are ready to breakout and gives John Carroll a dearth of scoring options. Last season, the Patriots relied heavily on all-MIAA A and BCL first-teamer Rodney Elliott (now at UMBC). John Carroll is 4-1 in the early season.

“We’re going to be a tougher matchup across the board,” said Tony Martin, who’s 190-96 at John Carroll (418-178 overall). “They’re hungry and eager to prove themselves.”
