Hundreds gather on Mervo football field for vigil in honor of fallen football star

Amidst the pain and tears for a life lost too soon, there was also a celebration of a life well lived, as hundreds gathered on the football field at Mergenthaler Technical High School, in Baltimore Thursday night, for a candlelight vigil to honor Elijah Gorham.
Gorham, a senior football player at Mervo who passed away on Monday, had been fighting for his life since an apparent head injury sustained in a game against Dunbar on Sept. 18.
With his teammates, coaches and family leading the way, mourners illuminated the field with candles that bore Gorham’s name and a set of tea lights spelled out the phrase “Elijah Strong” on the track.
Among the countless memories shared during the evening, many recalled that Gorham died doing what he loved most, playing football and playing it well. Moments before he was injured, Gorham returned a kickoff 78-yards for touchdown in the Dunbar game.
Gorham’s family has established a GoFundMe page to raise funds to aid them during this time of transition and to established an Academic Athletic Scholarship in Elijah Gorham’s name.
