Needing a win to reach the state playoffs for the first time in six years, Perryville ran into a determined Edgewood squad, Friday night, and the visiting Rams crushed the Panthers’ post-season plans with a 21-17 upset.
Edgwood (4-6) rallied from deficits of 14-0 and 17-7 with three touchdown runs by Quron Ewell. Ewell put the Rams on the board with a 32-yard run in the second quarter and then scored twice in the second half.
Perryville (5-5) seemed in control early as it took a 14-0 lead on a pair of rushing touchdowns by Joe Peaker. Following Ewell’s first score, the Panthers push their lead to 10 points with a 23-yard field goal from Alex Vines.
Edgewood’s defense stepped up in the second half and pitched a shutout over the final two quarters, allowing Ewell and the offense to rally.
The loss also dropped Perryville to third place in the Susquehanna Division of the UCBAC, at 4-2, behind Bohemia Manor and Patterson Mill (each 5-1). Edgewood, 3-3 in the division, finished tied for third with Rising Sun.
