Lake Clifton edges No. 1 Poly; City trips up Patterson (VIDEO HERE!!)

Lake Clifton boys’ basketball team returns to the court after a timeout at the Basketball Academy last weekend. Friday, the No. 13 Lakers pulled off an upset, defeating top-ranked Poly in a Baltimore City Division I contest on St. Lo Drive.

Life in the Baltimore City boys’ basketball Division I league is not easy. Just ask Patterson and Poly.

Last season’s city final participants both fell Friday evening. The reigning city champ and No. 12 Clippers lost to City College, 44-40, while top-ranked Poly dropped a 38-34 decision at No. 13 Lake Clifton.

The Lakers got 13 points from junior guard Michael Gray and Armon Harried added 12. Lake Clifton, which was routed at Patterson last week, improved to 9-3 overall and 2-1 in Division I.

It’s the second straight loss for Poly (8-3 overall, 3-1 Division I), which lost to second-ranked St. Frances Academy at Goucher College earlier in the week. Justin Lewis led the Engineers with 10 points, and Long Beach State University recruit Demetrius Mims finished with nine.

About a mile away, City held off the Clippers. Tyrin Gray led City (6-2, 1-1 Division I) with 11 points, and junior guard Jalen Yates had 10.

The Knights built a 10-point halftime lead on the Kane Street school before withstanding a late charge. The Clippers shaved the deficit to just 41-40 with about 45 seconds left after Zac Blackwell’s steal and layup.

David Smoot hit two free throws, pushing City’s lead to 43-40 with 37.4 seconds remaining. The Clippers missed a couple of attempts and Diego Thompson nabbed the rebound for City and was fouled with 10.5 seconds to play.

Thompson hit one of two free throws. Blackwell finished with 11 points for Patterson (5-7, 1-2 Division I), which didn’t have standout guard Gerard Mungo because of a hamstring injury.

Lake Clifton and Patterson are back in action Saturday afternoon in a makeup of the Baltimore/D.C. Challenge that was postponed due to snow back in early December. The Clippers play Theodore Roosevelt and Lake has H.D. Woodson.

Both games are at Lake Clifton.
