The Owings Mills Eagles have a lot to live up to this 2010-2011 wrestling season, hoping to do even better than their county and regional championship showings last year.
Proving to be one of the lead forces in Baltimore County, the Eagles finished the 2009-2010 season 21-1, winning county and regional championships.
Not only did they claim tournament wins, the Eagles also showed dominance as a dual-meet team, taking down a dual-meet regional title and placing second in the 1A/2A State Duals.
Owings Mills returns 10 regional qualifiers to this year’s roster, including county champs junior Taran Carr (152) and senior Larry Johnson (160).
Both Carr and Johnson went on to be regional champs, and placed fifth and fourth at the MPSSAA State Tournament, respectively.
One county champ whose season was brought short of a promising state showing was now junior Warren Mack (112). Mack’s broken arm following a county championship performance kept him from wrestling in the regions and states, but a healthy season could see him take down a state title this year.
In all, Owings Mills sent four wrestlers to the state tournament, placing three of them to rank seventh at the 2010 tournament. Placers included now sophomore Demetrius Johnson (regional champ and sixth at states), Carr (fifth) and Johnson (fourth).
Four wrestlers will be battling in the upper-weights of the Eagles’ roster, with sophomore Alex Solomon and senior Chris Gonzalez battling for the 215 spot, and senior Darius Carroll and junior Russell Barnes fighting for the 285 position.
