After a year hiatus, River Hill High girls’ soccer are state champions again. The No. 14 Hawks defeated southern Maryland’s Calvert, 2-1, in the Class 2A final at Loyola University’s Ridley Athletic Center Saturday evening.

Ashlee Hamer and Adriana Zakel each tallied for River Hill (14-3-2 overall), and Bridgette Wang and Megan Chun each provided assists. Sydney Watson scored for Calvert.

The Clarksville school did its offensive work in the opening 40 minutes, then the defense did the rest, securing its fourth 2A title in five years. The Hawks lost in penalty kicks to Howard County rival Marriotts Ridge in last fall’s 2A North Region quarterfinals.

“How we left the season last year put a bitter taste in their months and saying, ‘Hey we have to do better than that.’ So I give credit to all the girls, all 20 that are on our team,” said River Hill coach Brian Song.

It didn’t take long for the Hawks start erasing last year’s disappointment. In the 15th minute, Hamer got a pass from Wang, and put a shot over Calvert goalie Patty Massie into the left side of the net.

In the 24th minute, Zakel headed in Chun’s free kick, giving River Hill a 2-0 advantage. Calvert cut the lead in half in the 69th minute as Watson’s free kick deflected off River Hill goalie Jules Grasso’s hands and caroomed off the post into the net.

The Cavaliers pressed River Hill’s defense in the final minutes, but the Hawks didn’t break, improving to 11-0 in state championship games. River Hill won three straight Class 3A title before moving to 2A last season,

The Hawks will be in position for another championship run next fall with their entire 2016 roster set to return.

“It’s awesome,” said Hawks’ junior midfielder Grace Seybold. “We don’t have to leave yet.”
