A year ago, Jansen Durham was thrusted into McDonogh School’s starting quarterback as a freshman. He struggled and, eventually, was replaced.

Older and confident, Durham has gotten off to an impressive start in 2013. The sophomore threw four touchdowns Saturday as the fifth-ranked Eagles routed Benedictine College Prep from Richmond, 42-14, in a non-league contest in Owings Mills.

Joshua Woods caught a pair of touchdowns for McDonogh, and senior running back Syl Brown rushed for 104 yards and two scores. Raymon Minor and Jared Royster each had a touchdown for Benedictine (0-1 overall).

The Eagles scored the game’s first 35 points, securing its first 2-0 start since 2010 when they went 5-0. McDonogh would finish 6-4 that season.

After a 3-8 showing last fall with a young roster, McDonogh appears ready to return to prominence. One reason is the emergence of Durham (seven of 12 for 184 yards Saturday), who has six touchdown throws in his team’s first two contests.

In the opening quarter Saturday, Durham tossed scoring passes to junior Kareem Montgomery (53 yards) and Woods (28 yards.) Brown’s 24-yard run made it 21-0.

Woods hauled in a 52-yard pass from Durham, taking the lead to 28-0 before Brown scored his second touchdown for a running clock. Minor got Benedictine on the scoreboard with a 14-yard catch from quarterback Bryce Hamilton, but Durham found junior MikeCornwell for a nine-yard score, giving the Eagles a 42-7 halftime cushion.

Woods, a senior, finished with three catches for 95 yards for the Eagles, who’ll travel to Pennsylvania Saturday for a non-league tilt against Haverford School. McDonogh defeated Haverford, 48-12, in the team’s last meeting in 2010.
