Poets take out Delaware’s top ranked Caravel Academy, claim three titles

by Billy Loverocket

The Dunbar wrestling squad has been building towards this point for years. Coach Doug McClain has seen his team endure more than their fair share of lineup woes over recent seasons. For various reasons, the Poets had yet to field their best projected lineup, until this season.

On this weekend, at Bohemia Manor High School, the Poets (No.12 in the latest Maryland rankings) were the top dogs and did so with an exclamation mark, outpointing the No. 1 team in Delaware’s Division II, Caravel, 267.5-249.

“With the focus all year being about the dual team, it was good to see how the guys performed individually against this field of competition,” McClain said. “Anytime you can go head up with teams that place kids in Beast of the East, Escape the Rock, Ray Oliver, etc. you know you’re in the right place. We definitely took a couple steps in the right direction tonight.

“As a team early in the season, we make a pact to not discuss seeds, rankings or any of our opponents’ accomplishments. We beat a lot of good guys this weekend because we concentrated on us. If we lost it was because of mistakes we made, not who “he” was. Moving forward this helps the whole team focus on getting better not necessarily winning and losing.”

The Poets headed back to Baltimore City with three individual crowns in hand as No. 5 Camerin Deville (132), No. 5 Deairus Carr (152), and No. 8 Nyck Simpson (182) came out on top of their brackets.

Deville needed overtime to get by Trent Koshersperger (Kennett, PA), 7-6 in the tie-breaker portion. Carr posted a 14-7 decision of No. 8 Gavin Lloyd (Havre de Grace), and Simpson put a 6-3 win over North Caroline’s Trenton Hillard on the ledger.

“I expected my core guys to be right in the mix with anybody in their bracket and win or lose, for the most part they got it done,” McClain continued. “Cam (Deville) keeps moving in the right direction. His overtime win was against a kid that won the tournament last year. The kid (Jalen) Jones lost to (Caravael’s Alex Poore) placed in everything and we found out he was also a Delaware state champ. That was a great match to go back to and start to clean up some positions to prepare for states.

“Even though Carr and Simpson won they both know there’s a lot of room for improvement. (Patrick) Ford and (Dion) Crews-Harris had solid performances, and with Nyck and Ford basically wrestling up placing in a higher weight class was a big confidence boost.”

Pocketing silver were Corey Anderson (120), No. 8 Jones (138), No. 18 Ford (195), and No.7 Crews-Harris (285). Joseph Gary was fourth at 113, Devin Paige placed fifth at 106, and Dominic Williamson landed in the sixth spot at 126.

“I was really proud for Paige, Gary, Anderson, and Williamson,” added McClain. “All of them are young guys that scrapped all weekend and placed. I saw they were disappointed with how they finished, but as a coach, seeing the second wave compete in a tournament like this, I couldn’t help but to be excited for them moving forward.”

Caravel Academy took the most titles home with five, Luke Poore (113), Dylan Knight (120), Alex Poore (138), Nicholas Hall (160), and Anthony Bernieri (170).

Bel Air had one champ to go along with five other place-winners. At 106, No. 21 Gavin McDowell authored a mild upset of No. 17 Alex Bellarin (Kent County). It was Bellarin’s first loss of the year.

No. 14 Trevor Lorin (113) and Kyle Heidel (120) were third for the Bobcats. Placing fourth was Matt Conroy (195). Standing in fifth were Daniel Cross (145) and Ryan Strobel (220).

Harford Tech crowned the area’s only other champ at 220 when Nick Warner won an overtime thriller, 10-8, over Nicholas Cilla (Patriot, VA). Joining Warner on the awards stand for the Cobras were Ryan Turney (3rd at 160) and Logan Barkley (5th at 113).

Havre de Grace’s two finalists had to settle for silver, Lloyd and No. 12 Michael Sweigert. Sweigert dropped a major decision to Bernieri from Caravel. Other Warriors gaining honors were Ayden Boyd (106, 4th) and Zandon George (285, 5th).

Aberdeen’s Joseph Turner (120) and John Byers (195) were fifth. The host school saw only No. 16 Ian Artice (4th at 220) grab hardware.

Overlea’s three placers were it for the local contingency. No. 15 Jarius Cannon came up short in his title quest at 160 falling to Delaware’s No. 1 Hall. Unranked Nnamdi Anyakwo surprised Artice in the 220lb bronze medal bout with a pin at the 3:45 mark. No. 14 Jerome Vonziah was sixth at 132.

Two other champs were from Delaware, Concord’s Elias Smith (126) and St. George’s Jonathan Carrion (145). Pennsylvania’s Sun valley had two titlists, Ryan Catka (195) and Hunter Catka (285). Hunter Catka, who is ranked No.1 in the country by FloWrestling, pinned Dunbar’s Crews-Harris, 2:38. Ryan Catka rang up a tech-fall of Dunbar’s Ford, 19-4.

According to the most recent state dual meet rankings by BillyB’s Wrestling World, the Poets are the 1A favorite for the state duals title. Dunbar was a state runner-up in 2016 but has never won the coveted crown. That road could lead to an encounter with the squad that won the last two 1A titles, No.16 Southern Garrett. No.14 Williamsport looms as well and holds a 38-30 win over Southern Garrett from the Musselman Duals in West Virginia. This weekend showed the Poets will be up to the challenges that await.

“We still have a long way to go, but in March, I’ll be able to say that this was definitely a turning point in the season,” said McClain. “It was good to see some of the guys move into their end of year weights and do well. Our next few weeks are tough (War on the Shore tournament, then duals with Loyola, South Carroll, and Owings Mills). The guys needed this type of event to refocus on self-growth and be a little selfish about their own paths to success.”
