State final-bound Poets up to No. 7; final poll next week

With a 14th state final berth under its belt, Dunbar High has moved up in the next-to-last VSN’s Football Top 20 poll of the 2019 season.

The Poets advance from 10th to No. 7 after defeating Cambridge-South Dorchester in the Class 1A state semifinals Saturday. The Baltimore City school play Frederick County’s Catoctin Saturday afternoon for the state title at Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. 

Dunbar is the only area team headed to Annapolis after “Black Friday” losses by Elkton, Mervo, New Town and Old Mill. Mervo (3A) and Elkton (2A) dropped heartbreaking decisions while Old Mill (4A) and New Town (2A) lost by double-digits.

St. Frances Academy remains No. 1 with Mount St. Joseph, McDonogh School, Mervo and Franklin in the Top 5. Calvert Hall College, which defeated Loyola Blakefield in the 100th Turkey Bowl at sold out Unitas Stadium, is up to No. 6

Dunbar, Loyola Blakefield, South River and Archbishop Spalding completes the Top 10. The final VSN Football Top 20 poll of the 2019 season will be released early next week.
