In a battle for first place in the tough MIAA B Conference, the Glenelg Country School Dragons remained undefeated in league play, as they handed St. Pauls its first conference loss, on Wednesday night in Brooklandville, with a thrilling 46-44 win on a put-back by Kevin Boyd with 38 seconds to go in the game.
The Crusaders (10-4, 7-1) had two chances to tie or go ahead in the waning seconds of the game, but they couldn’t convert.
Cesar Jose-Vives led the Dragons (9-2, 6-0) with 16 points, Warren Powers had 11, and Boyd added nine. All three played key roles down the stretch after Isiah Miles fouled out.
Nigel Sydnor had another big night for St. Pauls with 21 points. He made a huge three-point play, the old fashioned way, with two minutes to play that tied the score.
Sydnor had 14 of his numbers in the first half to give the Crusaders a 30-26 lead at the break, but the Dragons outscored St. Paul’s 12-5 in the third quarter, and they held the Crusaders to just two buckets from the floor in the final eight minutes.
“The key was the defense,” said Jove-Vives. “We got the stops when we needed them. It was a great win for us because last year they beat us in the semifinals, and we just wanted to come out here and play hard. It was a statement game for us.”
The Crusaders were coming off a tough 59-57 win over Gilman on Monday.
