Gilman’s lacrosse team scored the game’s first six goals against Mount St. Joseph on Friday afternoon but the host Gaels didn’t go away quietly.
Led by senior Kevin MacQuilliam, Mount St. Joseph battled back and closed to within three goals early in the second half before the No. 3 Greyhounds turned it up to claim a 15-7 victory in MIAA A Conference action.
Gilman improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, while the Gaels fell to 1-4 and 0-3 respectively.
Senior attacker Conor Doyle paced the Greyhounds with four goals and three assists. Junior Gordie Koerber added three goals, while Riley DeSmit and Max Greene each scored two goals.
MacQuilliam led Mount St. Joseph with three goals. Tighe Harrison, Michael LeClair, Chris Costabile and Mike Goode all scored once. Goalie Joe Casey made six saves.
Gilman jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. Ryan Tucker finished off a pass from Doyle to start the scoring just 1:30 into the contest. Doyle added three goals in the run to give his team the big lead.
MacQuilliam got the Gaels on the board after he moved to his left and bounced a left-handed shot past goalie Palmer Murray (three saves).
Trailing 8-1 in the second quarter, St. Joe’s offensive came to life. Goode scored on a pass from LeClair as the Gaels rattled off four straight goals. Another score by MacQuilliam with 15 seconds left until halftime left the home team with a 10-6 deficit.
Harrison opened the third quarter with a goal to bring Mount St. Joseph to within three goals but Gilman reclaimed the momentum and scored five unanswered goals to end the game.
