Playing national power DeMatha on Saturday in the Battle of the Beltway, No. 4 Mount St. Joseph appeared to survive an early surge by the Stags as they battled back from an eight-defict to tie the contest, 24-24, at the half.
DeMatha (2-0), however, delivered another blow with a 21-3 third quarter blitz and the Gaels (3-1) were unable to recover a second time, as they lost for the first time this year, 61-44.
Not a single St. Joe player reach double-figures against a tough DeMatha defense. David Windsor was the leading scorer for the Gaels as he hit a three-point jumper and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Junior Jeramai Grant led DeMatha with 17 points. Dematha opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run and were able to convert several easy scores, while St. Joe had to battle just to create opportunities.
St. Joe will travel to Winters Mill for a non-conference game on Wednesday before taking on Charlotte Christian (NC) on Friday in the first round of the Gonzaga DC Classic.
