Senior forward’s hat-trick lifts Friars to road win

Anthony Schlee’s hat-trick provided all the offense Curley needed in a 3-0 win at John Carroll.

Archbishop Curley High senior Anthony Schlee netted a hat-trick, Wednesday afternoon in Bel Air, as the visiting Friars scored a 3-0 Baltimore Catholic Soccer League victory over John Carroll School.

The host Patriots were coming off an impressive 4-0 rout of Loyola Blakefield, on Saturday, but they could not solve Curley’s defense in this one. The Friars (1-1 overall) got solid play from the goalkeepers, freshman Joe Yakim and junior Mike Caulkins, who combined for six saves in the shutout, and controlled possession the second half to secure the win.

Ricky Schissler assisted on Schlee’s first goal to give Curley a 1-0 first half lead. Connor Overend provided a second half helper, on Schlee’s second score, as the Friars doubled their advantage. Finally, Schlee added a penalty kick tally, late in the contest.

“We were a little sloppy in the first half, but controlled the possession in the second half,” said Curley coach Barry Stitz, after the Friars bounced back from a 3-1 loss at Mount St. Joseph on Saturday. “It was nice to get the victory.”
