Cavaliers out for MIAA A crown

Junior Austin Tutas will direct Spalding’s offense in 2019. The Cavaliers finished 7-3 last season.

With practice for the 2019 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers

2018 record: 7-3 (Maryland Christian Schools Invitational finalist)

Overview: The Cavaliers reached the Maryland Christian Schools final, losing to Calvert Hall College. With the MIAA A regular season and postseason back for 2019, Spalding should contend for the championship with junior quarterback Austin Tutas (quarterback), Delaware State University commit Jalin Justice (linebacker), Virginia commit and Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 pick Jahmeer Carter (offensive/defensive line), linemen Wyatt Pellicano (BTC Super 22 selection) and junior running back/defensive back Jayon Venerable, who’s committed to Maryland.

Toughest 2019 opponent: Good Counsel. The Falcons, who played Spalding to a thrilling deadlock before weather forced a no-contest last year, are one of four Washington Catholic Athletic Conference squads ranked in MaxPreps’ preseason national Top 50. The Montgomery County school features four of the state’s Top 35 recruits, according to Rivals.com, in Michigan commit Kris Jenkins (defensive end), linebacker Mitchell Melton (Ohio State), Boston College commit Jason Scott (defensive back) and defensive back Jalen McNair.

Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Calvert Hall. The Cardinals, who defeated Spalding twice last year, will also be a MIAA A title contender in 2019. Running back Sean Tucker, a Syracuse commit, senior wide receiver Cole Herbert (both 2018 all-MIAA A selections and 2019 Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 picks) and junior quarterback Amir Jenkins return for Calvert Hall’s offense and senior linebacker Delaware State University commit Khalil Glover (Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 pick) will lead the defense.

By a number: 35. Total points scored by Spalding in three losses last season.
