Falcons hope to soar under new leadership

Dwayne Cornwall (left), Sincere Withespoon, Khalil Reed and Dajuan Hamlett will be back for Reginald Lewis in 2019. The Falcons reached the Class 1A North Region title game last fall.

With practice for the 2019 high school football season a few days away, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Reginald Lewis Falcons

2018 record: 8-4 (Class 1A North Region finalist)

Overview: The Falcons reached the 1A North Region final before losing to Dunbar. Seniors D’Monico Marshall (running back/linebacker), Khalil Reed (running back/defensive back) and Gartrell Johnson (defensive back/running back) will lead Reginald Lewis, which will have a new coach in Dominic Howard.

Toughest 2019 opponent: Dunbar. The Poets won the Baltimore City League’s Division I title in 2018, and routed Lewis in the 1A North final. The Orleans Street school returns one of the city’s top players in senior running back/defensive end Deon Crews-Harris along with tight end/defensive end Joshua Carr and junior quarterback Derrick Dunn.

Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Lake Clifton. The Lakers won the Baltimore City Division II league crown last season before Reginald Lewis knocked them off in the 1A North semifinals. The East Baltimore school returns arguably the league’s best player in quarterback/defensive back Michael Gray, along with Issac McCoy (running back/linebacker) in 2019.

By a number: 3. Consecutive losses in region final by Lewis.
