Gaels thinking big in 2019

Aamir Hall (left), Marlowe Wax and Tyler Leavy are back for Mount St. Joseph. The Gaels won 10 games last season.

With practice for the 2019 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Mount St. Joseph Gaels

2018 record: 10-2 (Maryland Christian Schools Invitational qualifier)

Overview: The Gaels should contend for the MIAA A Conference title in 2019 after winning a school-record 10 games last year. Running back Marlowe Wax, a Syracuse commit, and juniors Billy Atkins (quarterback) and Donte Thornton (wide receiver) are expected to be main clogs of another explosive offense while Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 picks Nate Slutzky (linebacker) and Tyler Leavy (line) return on defense with Wax (linebacker) and defensive back Aamir Hall, who’s committed to Richmond.

Toughest 2019 opponent: Good Counsel. The Falcons, who routed Mount St. Joseph last year, are one of four Washington Catholic Athletic Conference ranked in MaxPreps’ preseason national Top 50. The Montgomery County school features four of the state’s Top 35 recruits, according to Rivals.com, in Michigan commit Kris Jenkins (defensive end), linebacker Mitchell Melton (Ohio State), Boston College commit Jason Scott (defensive back) and defensive back Jalen McNair.

Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Calvert Hall College. The Cardinals will also be a MIAA A title contender in 2019. Running back Sean Tucker, a Syracuse commit, senior wide receiver Cole Herbert (both 2018 all-MIAA A selections and 2019 Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 picks) and junior quarterback Amir Jenkins return for Calvert Hall’s offense and senior linebacker Delaware State University commit Khalil Glover (Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 pick) will lead the defense.
