Mustangs ready to challenge again in Baltimore City
With practice for the 2019 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
2018 record: 10-2 (Class 4A state semifinalist)
Overview: The Mustangs reached their first state semifinal (lost to Southern Maryland’s North Point) after finishing second in the Baltimore City League’s Division I. The Hillen Road school returns senior quarterback Kelin Kimbrough along with Xavier Shell (linebacker/defensive end), Tyree Williams (wide receiver/running back) and Jarrett Gasque (wide receiver).
Toughest 2019 opponent: Dunbar. The Poets won the Baltimore City League’s Division I title in 2018 before losing in the 1A state semifinals. The Orleans Street school returns one of the city’s top players in senior running back/defensive end Deon Crews-Harris along with tight end/defensive end Joshua Carr.
Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Edmondson. The Red Storm will challenge Mervo and Dunbar in Division I. The West Baltimore school will be led by seniors Daniel Frink (running back/linebacker), defensive back Xavier Johnson, wide receiver/defensive back Barry Jones and running back Joseph Bright.
By a number: 5. Consecutive seasons of 9-plus victories by Mervo.
