Lions out to rule pack again in Carroll County

Nate Kent is back to guide Liberty’s offense in 2019. The Lions posted a perfect regular season in 2018 to win the Carroll County Athletic League title.

With practice for the 2019 high school football season is underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Liberty Lions

2018 record: 10-1 (Class 2A West Region semifinalist)

Overview: The Lions won the Carroll County Athletic League crown last season. The Eldersburg school has back one of the area’s top quarterback in senior Nate Kent, a Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 selection along with linebacker and BTC Super 22 pick McClain Butler (linebacker), Kyle Hutchinson (wide receiver/defensive back), Michael Spitz (wide receiver/defensive back) and punter Michael Spitz.

Toughest 2019 opponent: Linganore. The Lancers are one of the state’s top public programs, reaching the Class 3A state final (lost to Franklin) after claiming the top prize in 2017. Defensive linemen and Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 pick Dustin Keith will lead the Frederick school along with seniors Joey Bruscia (running back), Will Colletti and Ben Musselman (defensive backs) and juniors Scott Hummel (offensive line) and Cole Mitchell (defensive line).

Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Westminster. The Owls should challenge Liberty for the CCAL crown. Westminster will have a pair of Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 selections in Patrick Almony and Tre Price anchoring the offensive line with Levi Brodman (quarterback), Nathan Mattingly (running back) and receivers Ben Flowers and Evan Park at the skill positions.

By a number: 13. Consecutive regular season victories for Liberty.
