Dons hope to trend up in 2019

Loyola junior Jordan Moore is one of the area’s top underclassmen. The Dons went 6-4 as an independent last year.

With practice for the 2019 high school football season is underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Loyola Blakefield Dons

2018 record: 6-4

Overview: The Dons won six games last season as an independent after temporarily leaving the MIAA A Conference. Loyola returns 12 starters in 2019, led by junior defensive back/wide receiver Jordan Moore, who holds early scholarship offers from Boston College and Syracuse.

Toughest 2019 opponent: Calvert Hall College. The Cardinals will contend for the MIAA A title as the Dons will meet their Towson rival for the historic 100th time on Thanksgiving morning. Running back Sean Tucker, a Syracuse University commit, senior wide receiver Cole Herbert (both 2018 all-MIAA A selections and 2019 Baltimore Touchdown Club Super 22 picks) and junior quarterback Amir Jenkins return for Calvert Hall’s offense and senior linebacker and Delaware State commit Khalil Glover (BTC Super 22 pick) will lead the defense.

Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Georgetown Prep. The Little Hoyas won the Interstate Athletic Conference title last season. The Montgomery County school features one of the state’s top running back in Jalen Hampton, who’s committed to Virginia Tech.

By a number: 4. Win improvement from 2017 to 2018 for Loyola.
