Lakers look to defend crown in Baltimore City

Lake Clifton will look to Michael Gray in its pursuit of a second straight Baltimore City Division II title. The Lakers went 8-2 last season.

With practice for the 2019 high school football season a few days away, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Lake Clifton Lakers

2018 record: 8-2 (Class 1A North Region semifinalist)

Overview: The Lakers won the Baltimore City Division II crown before losing to Reginald Lewis in the 1A North Region semifinals. The East Baltimore school returns arguably the league’s best player in quarterback Michael Gray, along with Issac McCoy (running back/linebacker) in 2019.

Toughest 2019 opponent: Mervo. The Mustangs reached their first state semifinal (Class 4A) last season after finishing second in Division I. Senior quarterback Kelin Kimbrough and running back/wide receiver Tyree Williams will lead the Mustangs, who’ve been either first or second in Division I the past five seasons.

Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Reginald Lewis. The Jaguars ended Lake Clifton’s season in the North Region semifinals last year. Seniors D’Monico Marshall (running back/linebacker) and Gartrell Johnson (defensive back/running back) will lead Reginald Lewis.
