Cobras looking to strike in new division
With practice for the 2019 high school football season a few days away, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
Harford Tech Cobras
2018 record: 9-2 (Class 2A East Region semifinalist)
Overview: The Cobras, who had a historic 2017 season (first undefeated regular season and reached state semifinals in first playoff appearance), returned to postseason play last year. The Harford County school moves to the UCBAC Chesapeake Division in 2019 with all-county tight end Curtis Mckisset, TJ Lowery (defensive back/wide receiver), Khoury Harris (linebacker/wide receiver) and quarterback Ryan Hunt.
Toughest 2019 opponent: Edgewood. The Rams won the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Chesapeake title last season before losing in the 3A North semifinals. Senior Keyon Brown (wide receiver/defensive back) and junior linebacker Mason Putney will be Edgewood’s main threats.
Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Elkton. The Elks ended Harford Tech’s 2018 campaign en route to the 2A state semifinals. The Cecil County will have back its backfield of quarterback Nolan Null (31 touchdown passes in 2018) and running back Tayshawn Watters (11 rushing TDs) along with seniors Trevin Young and Mike Vass (wide receiver/defensive back) and junior linebacker Frank Turner.
By a number: 6. Games Harford Tech scored 40 or more points last season.
