Elks ready to charge in UCBAC
With practice for the 2019 high school football season a few weeks away, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
2018 record: 10-3 (Class 2A state semifinalist)
Overview: The Elks reached the 2A state final four, falling to eventual state champion Frederick County’s Oakdale. The Cecil County will have back its backfield of quarterback Nolan Null (31 touchdown passes in 2018) and running back Tayshawn Watters (11 rushing TDs) along with seniors Trevin Young and Mike Vass (wide receiver/defensive back) and junior linebacker Frank Turner.
Toughest 2019 opponent: Oakdale. The Bears, who ended Elkton’s season with a 38-0 whitewashing last year, comes to Cecil County for the rematch. Senior defensive back Luke Carey and quarterback Evan Reifer will lead the reigning 2A state champs.
Most intriguing 2019 opponent: Edgewood. The Rams won the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference Chesapeake title last season. Senior Keyon Brown (wide receiver/defensive back) will be Edgewood’s main threat after participating in the National Underclassmen Combine All-American game last December, along with junior linebacker Mason Putney.
