With practice for the 2018 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
Milford Mill Academy Millers
2017 record: 12-2 (Class 3A state finalist)
2017 review: The Millers reached their first state final since 1987, losing to Frederick County’s Linganore after winning the Baltimore County Division I championship. The Washington Avenue school returns three of the league’s best players in senior returner/defensive back Desmond Shell, senior linebacker Kevin Neal and senior linemen Darius Woods.
2018 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2017): 47-53 (.470)
Toughest 2018 opponent: Tuscarora. Despite winning four games last fall, the Frederick County school routed host Milford Mill in last year’s season opener. Senior running back Aris Hillard, who rushed for 300 yards and had a game-opening 95-yard kickoff return in last year’s match, returns for the Titans.
Most intriguing 2018 opponent: Franklin. The Indians were dethroned by Milford Mill as Baltimore County Division I champs and failed to advance out the region semifinals for the first time since 2011. The Baltimore County school has nearly two dozen letter winners scheduled back, led by all-league linebacker Jay Thompson, quarterback Emmitt Avery and Villanova commit Elijah Solomon (running back/linebacker).
