Breakdown of Indians’ schedule

Jay Thompson will try to lead Franklin football back atop Baltimore County’s Division I league. The Indians went 7-4 last season.

With practice for the 2018 high school football season several days away, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Franklin Indians

2017 record: 7-4 (Class 3A North Region semifinalist)

2017 review: The Indians reached their 12th consecutive postseason, but failed to advance out the region semifinals for the first time since 2011. The Baltimore County school has nearly two dozen letter winners scheduled back, led by all-league linebacker Jay Thompson.

2018 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2017): 61-57 (.517)

Toughest 2018 opponent: DeMatha Catholic. After a rare down season, the perennial Prince George’s County private school powerhouse should back among the nation’s elite. The Hyattsville school will feature two of the nation’s best performers in defensive back Nick Cross and Alabama commit DeMarcco Hellams (wide receiver/athlete).

Most intriguing 2018 opponent: Milford Mill Academy. The Millers ended Franklin’s run as Baltimore County Division I champs last season en route to the Class 3A state final. The Washington Avenue school returns three of the league’s best players in returner/defensive back Desmond Shell, linebacker Kevin Neal and linemen Darius Woods.

By a number: 5. Seasons of 10-plus wins for Franklin that was snapped in 2017.
