Breakdown of Cougars’ schedule
With practice for the 2018 high school football season a few weeks away, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
Chesapeake-Anne Arundel Cougars
2017 record: 7-4 (Class 3A East Region semifinalist)
2017 review: The Cougars reached postseason play for the second time in three seasons. The Pasadena school is scheduled to return 19 letter winners in 2018, led by seniors Russell Tongue (running back), Dylan Young (quarterback) and all-Anne Arundel kicker Colton Sprangler.
2018 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2017): 36-65 (.356)
Toughest 2018 opponent: Arundel. The Wildcats returned to postseason play (previous appearance 2014), but legendary coach Chuck Markiewicz stepped down after 18 seasons (31 total). Longtime assistant Jack Walsh has the reigns and 25 letter winners scheduled back, led by all-Anne Arundel linebacker Gereme Spraggins.
Most intriguing 2018 opponent: South River. After winning one game in 2016, the Seahawks rebounded with their best campaign since 2012 last year. The Edgewater school is scheduled back 28 letter winners, led by senior two-way standout linemen Ka’Ron Lewis.
