Breakdown of Mustangs’ 2017 schedule
With practice for 2017 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.
2016 record: 9-3 (Class 4A North Region finalist/Baltimore City Division I champion)
2016 review: The Mustangs won a third straight city Division I title and gained their first state playoff win (vs. Sherwood). The Hillen Road school have quarterback Carlos Davis, running back/defensive back Rykim Lemon and two-way linemen Karl Cromartie back among 32 letterwinners.
2017 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2016): 53-53 (.500)
Toughest 2017 opponent: Robert Taft. The Cincinnati school has won back-to-back Southwest Ohio Public League American Division titles, and reached the Division IV state playoffs last season. Running back/defensive back Demarco Bradley was an all-league selection last year, and junior wide receiver Chris’Seon Stringer is one of Ohio’s top underclassmen.
Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Dunbar. The Poets reached the 2A state semifinals last season, but Mervo has defeated the Orleans Street school the last three meetings. Dunbar has 33 letterwinners scheduled back, including senior quarterback Jared Lewis and senior running back/linebacker Sean Tolbert.
By a number: 22. City league victories over the past three seasons (in 24 games) by Mervo.
