Breakdown of Elks’ 2017 schedule


Raiquon Estep had an impressive junior season for Elkton football last fall. The Elks reached the Class 2A state title game in 2016.

With practice for 2017 high school football season underway, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Elkton Elks

2016 record: 12-2 (Class 2A state finalist/UCBAC Susquehanna champion)

2016 review: The Elks lost to Frederick County’s Walkersville in the 2A state final. The Cecil County squad will have back one of the region’s top running backs in 2017 in senior Raiquon Estep along with all-Cecil offensive linemen Myles Sewell and Tazz Smith and defensive back Mike Matthews.

2017 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2016): 53-54 (.495)

Toughest 2017 opponent: Bel Air. The Bobcats reached the state postseason for the third straight season and shared the UCBAC Chesapeake crown with Havre de Grace and North Harford. The Harford County school is scheduled to return 25 letter-winners including all-Harford picks Devin Anderson (defensive back) and linemen Cameron DeJohn.

Most intriguing 2017 opponent: Havre de Grace. The Warriors reached back-to-back 1A state final and hope for a title breakthrough this fall. The Harford County school returns 16 letterwinners including all-league performers Jordan Day (wide receiver/defensive back), linemen Reggie Marks, linebacker Sean Greeley and kicker Clay Harris.

By a number: 27. Differential in Elkton’s two losses (33-6 to Walkersville and 27-0 to Kent Island) last season.
