With just two weeks before the start of practice for the 2012 high school football season, Varsity Sports Network’s Derek Toney takes a look at the regular season itinerary for select area teams.

Glenelg Gladiators

2011 record: 9-3 (Class 2A South Region finalists; No. 10 in final VSN Top 20)

2011 rewind: The Gladiators rebounded from a 5-5 showing in 2010 to sharing the Howard County league title with Atholton. Glenelg graduated all-league defenders Glenn Lucas and John Warfield, but a solid offensive nucleus featuring quarterback Mark Darden, wide receiver David Brookhart, tight end Ben Carta, running back Nick Crabill and all-league kicker Luke Brister will highlight 23 scheduled returning letterwinners in 2012.

2012 opponents’ win/loss record (from 2011): 53-58 (.477)

Toughest 2012 opponent: River Hill. The Hawks were back among the state elite, winning the Class 3A state championship after a 2-2 start. The Clarksville school graduated all-league performers in Aaron Wells, Raamah Vaughn, Randall Lawson and Jason Johnson, but a solid showing at the Ravens’ 7-on-7 Passing Jamboree in addition to 17 scheduled returning letterwinners should have the Hawks back in contention in 2012.

Most intriguing 2012 opponent: Atholton. The Raiders had its finest campaign in 2011, not losing on-field until the 3A East Region finals. The Columbia school graduated all-league quarterback Brian McMahon and league defensive player of the year Steve Whiting, but is slated to return 23 letterwinners in 2012.

By a number: 7. Total margin in Glenelg’s two regular season losses in 2011.
