On a night Mount Carmel girls’ basketball had a “Blackout,” the Cougars continued their early season breakout Friday.
Mount Carmel routed Perry Hall, 75-28, in a non-league contest on Old Eastern Avenue. Senior forward Ayana Brim scored a game-high 22 points, and senior guard Jaylah Lewis came off the bench and netted 16 points.
In front of a packed audience, many in black shirts, Mount Carmel scored the game’s first 20 points en route to its fifth straight victory. At 6-1, the Cougars are on pace to surpass last season’s win mark (10).
Mount Carmel coach Rob Long lauded the community support.
“People love excitement, this is an exciting basketball team and people love to see them play,” said Long. “Not just student body, but we have great parental support and even we were quote unquote bad, we still had a decent crowd come out.”
“We really appreciate the support, the fans were loud and really like it a lot,” Brim said.
The Cougars gave their faithful a lot to like. Brim scored 12 points in the game’s first six minutes, and Mount Carmel clamped down on Perry Hall (1-2) defensively, allowing only a Kara Dietrich’s 3-pointer in the opening quarter.
“We have to make sure that we play our game and play hard,” Brim said. “Whenever we play our game, it’s a good game.”
The rout continued in the second quarter as Brim continued to score in the low post and Lewis connected on shots from behind the arc. Mount Carmel led 40-10 at halftime.
“As coaches we have to smart because as coaches we get a little lackadaisical with leads,” said Long, whose team’s six victories have been by an average of 23 points. “But I keep pushing them, and try to teach principles that we will pay off later on in other games.”
The Cougars (3-0) are tied with Glenelg Country School, Mount de Sales Academy and St. Paul’s School atop the IAAM B Conference heading into the holiday break. The Cougars will compete at the Title IX Classic at the D.C. Armory next week.
“We got to keep working hard, everyday, no days off, “Brim said.
“Those games will be a dose of reality for us,” Long said. “Those games will mean something to us as we get ready for conference play.”
