One point was the deciding factor in the 2010 2A North Region finals, which saw a fourth-quarter touchdown push the Eastern Tech Mavericks past the City College Knights in a 7-6 win.

The fire deep down inside the returning Knights is still a blaze and will certainly be seen in the team’s 2011 season opener, featuring none other than the fire starting Mavericks.

The high-powered Knight offense sees seven returnees, featuring Steffin Wilkens, Tyrell Moore and Da’Quan Smith in the backfield. On the outside, Tyreke Richburg and Charles Tapper highlight the receiving corps, while Derrell Shelton holds down the frontline.

Holding against the Knights’ offense, Eastern Tech will look to defend its endzone and field position with Rashard Smith, Aaron Skeen, Josh Stephens and Brandon Jones, headlining a veteran defensive front, along with a worthwhile secondary.

Returning All-County player Savon Norman will be alongside Kyle Bosserman and Milan Barry-Pollock in the secondary, as Mark Borunda and Francis Massally will post behind the defensive line as linebackers.  The Mavs are 6-0 against Baltimore City teams in recent years, beating City College, Baltimore Poly and Edmondson-Westside.

ETEastern Tech went just a bit further than City College in the 2010 season, coming one win shy of reaching the team’s fourth straight trip to M&T Bank Stadium for the state finals, missing the school’s final shot at the Class 2A honor.  This season, the team moves to a Class 3A division.

After an impressive four-year run in the smaller division, the Mavericks move to an elevated status, competing with 2010 state finalist Franklin, playoff regulars Hereford and Catonsville, and other powerhouses North Harford, City and Patterson.

Friday night’s match-up will take place at CCBC-Essex, kicking off at 7:00 p.m.
