The state field hockey tournament begins Monday afternoon with first-round region games. Ten local teams have garnered No. 1 seeds in the region bracket.
Top-ranked and defending Class 4A champ Severna Park has the top seed in the 4A East. The unbeaten Falcons, who closes the regular season against No. 3 Glenelg in the District V championship Monday evening, opens their title defense Thursday against Annapolis in the quarterfinals.
Barring an upset, Severna Park will collide again Anne Arundel County league rival and No. 2 South River in the region finals.
No. 4 Westminster, which lost to Severna Park in last year’s state finals, is the top seed in 4A West. No. 17 Dulaney will look for a return trip to the state Final Four as the No. 1 seed in 4A North. The Lions lost to Severna Park in the state semifinals last season.
Newly crowned Baltimore County champ and No. 13 Hereford is the top seed in 3A North. The defending state 3A champs will host either Towson or Catonsville in the quarterfinal round Thursday.
Mount Hebron is No. 1 in the 3A East, and begins its pursuit of a return trip to the state semifinals Thursday against Centennial. The Vikings lost to Hereford in last fall’s state Final Four.
In 2A, No. 9 Century (West) and Lansdowne (North) are top seeds. The Knights lost to Glenelg in the last year’s state semifinals.
Glenelg is the No. 2 seed in the South Region behind St. Mary’s County’s Patuxent. The Gladiators lost to Fallston in the state title game last fall.
No. 15 Fallston, seeking a fourth state championship, is the No. 2 seed in the North. Sparrows Point (North) and Bohemia Manor (South) are No. 1 seeds in Class 1A.
With a pair of byes, the Pointers won’t take the field until the semifinal round Nov. 1 against either Loch Raven or Harford Tech. Recently crowned UCBAC champ and seventh-ranked Patterson Mill is the No. 2 seed. The Huskies play Joppatowne in the region semifinals.
Bohemia Manor opens its postseason with either Havre de Grace or St. Michael’s in the region semifinals. The Eagles lost to Pocomoke in the state championship game last fall.
The region finals are scheduled for Nov. 3, with the titlists advancing to the state Final Four, Nov. 8th and 10th. Broadneck will host the 1A and 3A state semifinal contests, and the 2A and 4A games will take place at Franklin.
The state championships return to Washington College Nov. 13.
