Oakland Mills rallies past Marriotts Ridge, gains a piece of Howard County boys’ hoops title; Glenelg hands No. 9 River Hill second straight loss

Oakland Mills boys’ basketball coach Jon Browne talks to his team during a timeout Tuesday. The Scorpions captured a share of the Howard County championship with a second straight comeback – 59-51 over Marriotts Ridge in Columbia Thursday.

Entering the week, the odds were against Oakland Mills High in gaining the Howard County boys’ basketball title. Thanks to their play, and some luck, the Scorpions are again champions.

Oakland Mills defeated Marriotts Ridge, 59-51, Thursday afternoon in Columbia in the regular season finale for both. Robert Burgess scored 24 points and Daeshawn Eaton added 13 for the Scorpions.

Trailing 40-31, Oakland Mills (17-4 overall, 13-3 Howard) outscored the Mavericks, 28-11, in the fourth quarter to win its ninth straight decision. The win combined with Glenelg’s victory over River Hill gives the Scorpions a share of the HoCo title, the first since 2015 and sixth in the last eight seasons.

Needing a win to secure the league crown outright, River Hill dropped its second straight decision, 52-49, to Glenelg in Clarksville. Carson Dick’s 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in regulation was the difference for the Gladiators (12-10, 9-7 Howard), who rallied from a 13-point deficit.

Dick finished with 17 points. Jaden Martin had a game-high 21 points for River Hill (18-4, 13-3 Howard), which blew a double-digit lead Tuesday at Oakland Mills. Martin, a senior guard, surpassed the 1,000-point career plateau

The Hawks and Scorpions are likely to meet again in the Class 2A South Region Section I playoffs which start next Friday.
