Hereford and McDonogh soccer squads scrimmage
by Derek Toney
With their seasons set to start in days, McDonogh School and Hereford girls' soccer teams scrimmaged Monday afternoon in Owings Mills.
It was the final tuneup for the defending IAAM A Conference champ Eagles, who will travel to Indiana for the Zionsville Eagle Invitational. McDonogh, ranked No. 5 nationally by TopDrawerSoccer.com, will play Notre Dame Academy from Ohio and Kentucky.
After losing to River Hill in the Class 2A state final last fall, Hereford is primed for another championship run. All but two starters return for Bulls coach Brad Duvall.
With sophomore forward Peyton Patrick, one of the area's elite players, senior Lily Robinson and sophomore Laura Schmidt (center back) leading the charge, Hereford will look to defend its Baltimore County title. In addition to McDonogh, the Bulls scrimmaged IAAM A finalist Mercy and perennial IAAM A power Archbishop Spalding.
"What I'm looking for right now is our girls to make the adjustments," said Duvall, whose team opens next week with Patapsco and Sparrows Point, the five-time reigning Class 1A state champions. "Focus on one thing at a time...build piece by piece."
